The Tour, Prices & Times . . .
Kaikoura Night Sky is a tour designed to introduce people to the Southern Hemisphere Night Sky over New Zealand. Kaikoura is an excellent location for viewing as it generates very little light pollution, and our site out on the Kaikoura Peninsula acts as a natural observatory with 360-degree views.
Your guide will take you on a journey from Horizon to Horizon through the night sky using a blend of Practical, Scientific, Maori and other indigenous Knowledge.
- See the Stars and Constellations unique to the Southern Hemisphere.
- Find the Southern Cross and discover how it is used to find south.
- Watch as the Zodiac Star Signs are drawn out for you in the sky.
- A laser is used to highlight individual stars to ensure there is no confusion when watching.
- Discover the night sky objects significant to Maori. Kaikoura has a strong Maori History and the night sky still plays an important role to this day (Creation of the North Island, New Year etc.).
- Stories will be told to spark the imagination and help in remembering particular groups of stars.
A powerful 8" telescope is then used to view objects far beyond the reaches of the Natural Eye. You will have the opportunity to view some of the following:
- Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and Venus.
- The Moon.
- Star Clusters (Pleiades, Omega Centuri, the Jewel Box etc.)
- Nebulae (Orion Nebulae, Tarantula Nebulae, Eta Carina etc.)
- Alpha Centuri (Neighbouring Star)
The tour cost is $50 per Adult and $40 per Child (under 15). Group sizes are limited to 10 people to provide a more personal experience and a hot cup of tea and chocolate is offered during telescope viewing.
Tour times vary depending on the time of year. With the first tour commencing approximately 1 hour after Sunset. The tour duration is 1-1½ hours.
